2024 International Residential Code (IRC)

One book covering an entire house. The International Residential Code is unusual among model codes in that it bundles structural, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas and electrical provisions for one- and two-family dwellings into a single volume — so a residential builder can work from the IRC alone rather than juggling five separate codes.

What the code covers

• Building planning: room dimensions, egress, light and ventilation, fire separation
• Foundations, floors, wall construction, roof framing and structural provisions
• Energy efficiency requirements for residential construction
• Mechanical and fuel gas systems, including venting and appliance installation
• Plumbing: water supply, drainage, waste and vent systems
• Electrical provisions adapted from the NEC for dwelling work

Who it’s for

Residential builders and remodelers, building officials and inspectors, architects and designers working on houses, and candidates for ICC residential certification exams.
