Parayana: The Poetic Works of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi

Ramana Maharshi wrote very little, and almost all of it was verse. Parayana collects those poems — the works chanted daily at his ashram at Tiruvannamalai, which is what the title refers to: parayana is recitation.

What’s in the book

• The principal poetic works, including the hymns to Arunachala
• Upadesa Saram — the essence of his teaching in thirty verses
• Ulladu Narpadu (Forty Verses on Reality) and its supplement
• Verses on self-enquiry and the nature of the self
• Devotional compositions alongside the philosophical ones

What to expect

Where Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi records his conversation, this is his own written work — compressed, formally structured, and unusual in combining rigorous non-dual philosophy with unmistakable devotion to a mountain. Meant for recitation as much as for reading, and it repays being read aloud.

Who it’s for

Students of Advaita Vedanta, readers who already know the Talks and want the primary works, and devotees who follow the ashram’s chanting practice.
