2018 International Residential Code for One- and Two-Family Dwellings (IRC)

Still the enforced residential code across a good number of US jurisdictions, because code adoption moves slowly and many states remain several cycles behind publication. If your building department is on the 2018 IRC, this is the book your plans are reviewed against — not the newest one.

What the code covers

• Building planning for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three storeys
• Egress, room dimensions, light, ventilation and fire separation
• Foundations, floor and wall framing, and roof-ceiling construction
• Energy efficiency provisions for dwellings
• Mechanical, fuel gas and plumbing systems in one volume
• Electrical provisions for residential work

Before you buy

Confirm which edition your jurisdiction has adopted. Buying the current national edition when your inspector enforces 2018 is the more common and more expensive mistake.
